It is estimated that 181 million people worldwide could suffer from acute food insecurity in 2022. These projections currently include only 42 of the 53 affected countries.<\/p>\n

At present, populations in sub-Saharan Africa are experiencing unprecedented levels of food and nutrition insecurity. The most marginalized populations, particularly women and girls, as well as displaced and refugee persons, will be the hardest hit.<\/p>\n

Acute food insecurity reached record levels worldwide in 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2021, acute food insecurity (IPC 3) affected 193 million people across 53 countries<\/strong>. This represents an increase of 40 million people compared to 2020, according to the Global Network Against Food Crises.<\/p>\n

Three factors behind hunger: conflicts, the economy, and the climate<\/strong><\/p>\n

On March 14, 2022, Ant\u00f3nio Guterres warned of the threat of a \u201churricane of famines\u201d<\/em> and a \u201ccollapse of the global food system.\u201d<\/em> For the UN Secretary-General, the Ukrainian crisis risks \u201cpushing up to 1.7 billion people \u2014 over one-fifth of humanity \u2014 into poverty, destitution, and hunger.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

As part of this campaign, M\u00e9decins du Monde Canada, the Humanitarian Coalition, and its member organizations raised over 10.6 million dollars, including 5 million dollars in matching funds from the Government of Canada, to feed and care for people suffering from hunger, particularly in South Sudan. Your donations are already providing food, water, and health care where they are most needed.<\/p>\n

The Humanitarian Coalition (HC) brings together 12 leading aid organizations to offer Canadians a simple and effective way to support international humanitarian disasters. The HC also partners with Global Affairs Canada to enable its member organizations to respond to lesser-known disasters of small and medium scale.<\/p>\n
