In response to the scale of the disaster, M\u00e9decins du Monde has expanded its activities on the ground to address the urgent needs of populations affected by the floods.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>ONE IN SEVEN RESIDENTS AFFECTED BY THE FLOODS<\/h2>\n<p>The country experienced an unprecedented monsoon season, following a record drought in the spring. \"<em>Usually, there are three or four monsoon cycles; this time, we\u2019ve had up to seven or eight. The cumulative effect is completely devastating<\/em>,\" notes David Annequin, head of M\u00e9decins du Monde\u2019s emergency unit.<br \/><\/p>\n<p>Consequences: over 1,000 deaths and at least 30 million people affected\u2014one in seven.<\/p>\n<h2>THE TOLL COULD BE MUCH HIGHER...<\/h2>\n<h2>A HUMANITARIAN EMERGENCY<\/h2>\n<p>At least <strong>1,000 deaths and 1,500 injured<\/strong>, nearly one million homes destroyed or damaged, and <strong>33 million people affected<\/strong>. This is the current grim toll of the exceptional floods that have struck Pakistan since June. An entirely disrupted monsoon followed a severe drought, which led to glacier melt and promoted runoff on soils parched over recent months.<\/p>\n<p>6.4 MILLION people currently require humanitarian assistance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pakistan has issued an international appeal for aid<\/strong> and declared a state of emergency on August 26 to address the disaster.<\/p>\n<ul><li>Since June 2022, a record monsoon season over the past 30 years has caused severe flooding affecting over 80% of Pakistan.<\/li><li>33 million people affected, including 7.6 million internally displaced persons<\/li><li>6.4 million people in need of humanitarian assistance<\/li><li>2 million homes fully or partially damaged<\/li><li>1 million of the country\u2019s livestock affected<\/li><\/ul>\n<h3>Impact on Health<\/h3>\n<ul><li>The floods have severely impacted Pakistan\u2019s health sector. Over 1,400 public health facilities, including 208 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, have been partially or completely destroyed. Medicines, medical equipment, and vaccines were swept away by the floods. Resupplying supplies remains difficult due to significant damage to roads and bridges.<\/li><li>Outbreaks of malaria, dengue, acute watery diarrhea, and cholera have been reported and are expected to increase massively in the coming days. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, over 5,000 patients were identified in 24 hours with communicable diseases such as diarrhea, skin infections, eye infections, pneumonia, typhoid, and cholera, particularly in the hardest-hit districts.<\/li><li>As water recedes, people are returning home, doubling the pressure on public health structures that survived the floods.<\/li><\/ul>\n<h2>M\u00e9decins du Monde\u2019s Response<\/h2>\n<p>Present in Pakistan since 1996, M\u00e9decins du Monde has redirected its activities to provide <strong>emergency medical aid<\/strong> in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. From its base in Peshawar, in the northwest of the country, mobile clinics have been deployed across several districts to reach populations affected by the floods and displaced persons. \"<em>We have also dispatched staff to provide medicines, support clinics and hospitals, and help them cope with the influx of displaced persons in need<\/em>,\" explains David Annequin.<\/p>\n<p>These activities are essential, especially since <strong>humanitarian aid and access to populations are sometimes extremely difficult, if not nearly impossible.<\/strong> Some areas are inaccessible due to armed clashes or geographical constraints when villages in the high mountains are cut off from main roads.<\/p>\n<h3>To date, M\u00e9decins du Monde has:<\/h3>\n<ul><li>Organized the response starting August 28 through integrated outreach and reproductive health services with mobile clinics in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.<\/li><li>Provided primary health care consultations, including prenatal and postpartum care<\/li><li>Offered consultations on sexuality and reproduction for adolescents and women<\/li><li>Organized screening campaigns<\/li><li>Set up residential tents to accommodate over 52,000 people<\/li><li>Donated medicines and equipment to 2 public health facilities, including a university hospital in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.<\/li><li>Delivered 6 tons of medicines and 1 cholera kit<\/li><li>Collaborated closely with the district health department and other stakeholders to ensure coordination of operations.<\/li><\/ul>\n<h2>A SIGNIFICANTLY UNDERESTIMATED TOLL<\/h2>\n<p>Pakistan had already experienced deadly floods in 2010.
