As the fourth International Conference in Solidarity with Venezuelan Refugees and Migrants<\/strong>, jointly organized by the Government of Canada and the European Union, concluded on March 17, we call on the international community to open its eyes to the dramatic reality of the situation facing Venezuelan exiles in the Americas and to act accordingly.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Donor countries and the European Commission have renewed their financial pledges to address the Venezuelan crisis and its impact on the lives of millions, but these will not be sufficient to meet the many challenges faced by Venezuelan migrants and refugees.<\/p>\n

The reduction in available funding and the persistent funding shortfall in recent years raise questions about the extent to which donor countries have honoured the financial commitments made at previous conferences.<\/p>\n

The situation of Venezuelan refugees and migrants continues to deteriorate, yet this crisis seems to have lost the attention of Western media and donors.<\/strong> The Regional Refugee and Migrant Response Plan estimates that USD 8.5 million is needed to meet basic health needs between 2023 and 2024. These estimates do not include the needs of Venezuelan migrants and refugees in Central America.<\/p>\n

The persistent vulnerability and lack of protection for Venezuelan refugees and migrants in the region have led to an increase in exploitation<\/strong>, including forced labour and sex trafficking<\/strong>. Venezuelan migrants and refugees also face stigmatization and discrimination in the region.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the crisis has overwhelmed the capacity of neighbouring countries to provide assistance and support<\/strong>, with a growing number of exiles stranded at the \u201cDari\u00e9n Gap\u201d in Panama, as well as in Central and North America, en route to North America via Mexico.<\/p>\n

To ensure inclusion and access to health care for migrants, we call for greater public investment in health systems and reforms<\/strong> to guarantee the right to health for all in host countries<\/strong>, as well as support for civil society organizations<\/strong> working on the ground. Finally, we recommend improving access to legal and asylum pathways for Venezuelan migrants, particularly in North America.<\/p>\n

M\u00e9decins du Monde also recommends establishing mechanisms to better assess the needs of migrant populations and track their movements<\/strong> throughout their migration journey, while ensuring the confidentiality of their personal information, as well as the development of cross-border coordination mechanisms<\/strong> to improve access to care and prevent violence against Venezuelan migrants. Lastly, we urge the creation of common protocols for victims of violence<\/strong>, including sexual violence, addressing the provision of medical care, psychosocial support, and financial empowerment.<\/p>\n

The regional conference to be organized by Mexico and Colombia must ensure that implementing solutions to the problems faced by Venezuelan migrants and their host communities is their priority.<\/p>\n

M\u00e9decins du Monde believes that only concerted and sustained action will address the needs and challenges<\/strong> faced by Venezuelan refugees and migrants and uphold the dignity and rights of those affected by this crisis.<\/p>\n
