The provisional death toll stands at 2,100<\/strong> and at least as many injured, half of whom are in serious condition. The toll is expected to rise as rescue efforts continue. <\/p>\n

Our teams and partners are preparing for exploratory missions in the coming days. These will assess the needs of affected populations in terms of health care and mental health in the remote villages and mountainous areas<\/strong> hit by the earthquake.
<\/p>\n\n

Several local partners, some of whom we already work with in Rabat and Oujda, will take part in the operations. <\/p>\n

As soon as we can, we will go on site to implement the most effective humanitarian response possible<\/strong> \u2013 Dr. Tarik Oufkir, Director of the Maroc Solidarit\u00e9 M\u00e9dico-Sociale association, a partner of M\u00e9decins du Monde.<\/p>\n

At present, every second counts to save lives<\/strong>. The situation is particularly worrying in the villages of the Atlas, which were already experiencing significant food insecurity. <\/p>\n

For Manon Hourdin, our Director of International Operations and Strategic Development, \"The coming days will be crucial to avoid a disruption in the continuum of care<\/strong>. The emergency response must continue while maintaining care for chronic diseases and access to medication.\"<\/p>\n

The water issue<\/strong> must also be taken seriously: \"The priority will be to quickly distribute drinking water and soap, especially if local wells and other systems are affected. Hygiene conditions can then deteriorate rapidly, which can facilitate the emergence of epidemics, as is often seen during earthquakes or natural disasters.\"<\/p>\n
