In partnership with the Montreal Indigenous Network, the Montreal Indigenous Friendship Centre (CAAM) and the CHUM, Doctors of the World launched in September 2023 a Community health clinic for Indigenous people. This clinic provides accessible and adapted care to meet the needs of Indigenous communities living in Montreal.
The goal? To offer integrated primary and community care services that are easily accessible, safe and sensitive to the cultural realities of Indigenous communities living in urban settings in Tiohtià:ke / Montreal, using a trauma-informed approach that considers the broader social determinants of health.
Since 2018, the Indigenous navigation program has facilitated access to care for Indigenous people experiencing homelessness in Montreal. As an integral part of the care team, Indigenous navigators are members of the communities who support individuals in their processes, adapting to their cultural reality and establishing a relationship of trust.
An Indigenous health navigator is a companion from Indigenous communities who facilitates access to care for Indigenous people in urban settings or in situations of vulnerability. They provide individualized support, create a culturally safe space, and raise awareness among health professionals about Indigenous realities. Their role also includes advocacy and adapting services to ensure respectful and inclusive care.
The current project, which was documented in collaboration with the Montreal Indigenous Network and presented by Médecins du Monde as part of the Viens Commission, has set the following objectives:In partnership with the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM), Médecins du Monde has developed a training program that helps health professionals understand the service, telemedicine, and the support of Indigenous people experiencing homelessness.
