Marked by years of war, Iraq continues to face numerous political, economic, social, and security challenges. Population movements within its borders represent a major difficulty in a sensitive area where new conflicts (with Kurdistan or Turkey) are feared and could lead to new massive displacements of populations and Syrian refugees, particularly in the Dohuk governorate.
Since the 2014 genocide perpetrated against the Yazidi community, thousands of women and children have been abducted and subjected to sexual assaults and other atrocities. Several years later, some villages still have not been demined, and reconstruction is expected to be slow as the region is neglected by the government. The community suffers the repercussions of these years of instability, and the health crisis persists with a lack of doctors and qualified healthcare personnel, drug shortages, and the unsanitary conditions of partially destroyed buildings, among other issues.

During COVID-19, the project maintained essential health services through the supply of personal protective equipment and training on infection prevention and control measures.
