Our mission

No health without mental health.

Living in precariousness brings its share of daily anxiety and distress. Disenfranchised persons or those experiencing homelessness are extremely isolated and have often lived through various traumatic experiences. As a result, they may feel anxious and depressed. However, their requests for mental health assistance generally encounter numerous access barriers, or even refusals, and the available services and care are often poorly adapted to their specific needs.

We provide psychotherapy support to disenfranchised persons to empower them, improve their quality of life, and enhance their overall psychological well-being. We also support personal well-being while strengthening the professional capacities and expertise of community workers in the fields of homelessness and marginalization. Furthermore, we aim to mobilize with the populations targeted by our mission to support their ability to advocate for their rights and develop collaborative actions that will contribute to the right to health.

Over the years, Doctors of the World Canada has developed recognized expertise in mental health and psychosocial support, integrated into all our programs. Our fight: Mental health and psychosocial support
Our mission

Capacity building and expertise development.

Community workers and peer support workers are on the front line in supporting persons experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless and form an essential foundation of our social fabric. It is imperative to recognize the importance and expertise of their work. Carrying out complex interventions in often difficult contexts, they may be subject to compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma. Witnessing distress and accompanying suffering individuals on a daily basis, they too need support, a space for dialogue and listening to step back and take care of themselves.

Médecins du Monde advocates for equal access to care for everyone, whatever their status.

Details of mental health services

Some situations do not exactly match the criteria, but we may still be able to help. Select your situation.

Our individual psychological support and psychotherapy services are available to outreach workers and peer support workers from over 70 Montreal community organizations, primarily working in the fields of homelessness, substance use, and sex work. Our team of psychologists and mental health professionals offers free short- or medium-term individual psychotherapy and psychological support. The services are confidential, and individuals are free to address topics of their choice, whether personal or professional.
Doctors of the World offers clinical supervision services to community outreach teams at their workplace. These sessions help enhance their expertise and strengthen their capacities by fostering clinical reflection on practices and interventions. It also provides a space for discussion where outreach workers and peer support workers can share their professional experiences and gain perspective, with the aim of strengthening team bonds.
