Can the community health approach become a solution in crisis contexts such as in Haiti?

WORDS THAT REFLECT OUR WORLDVIEW
To celebrate our 25th anniversary, we have decided to organize a series of virtual debates for you on issues related to health and social change. These online events are free and open to everyone.
Theme
For several months, Haiti has been severely affected by sociopolitical instability and the repercussions of a violent earthquake that occurred on August 14. This context makes access to health care extremely difficult, particularly for populations living in marginalized neighborhoods and regions far from health services.
Médecins du Monde Canada has been working daily with local actors in Haiti since 1996 to build a bridge between communities and health institutions in order to strengthen health services. All this work is done directly within the most excluded communities, in collaboration with community health workers, women’s groups, community leaders, and grassroots community organizations.
This approach promotes community awareness and mobilization, investment in primary care providers, empowerment, the fight against stigmatization, and the rejection of the hierarchization of knowledge.
As part of its 25th anniversary, Médecins du Monde Canada invites you to join the discussion on the importance of the community-based approach to health in a humanitarian crisis context like the one currently affecting Haiti.

For 25 years, we have contributed to social change
For 25 years, Médecins du Monde Canada has been reaching out to people experiencing great vulnerability, marginality, or social exclusion where they are, without judgment.
From our first international missions in 1996 in Haiti, in the municipality of Léogâne, where our practices aimed at strengthening local capacities, to the start of our national actions in 1999 with our outreach nursing program, and still today with our mental health support program offered to people experiencing homelessness and community workers, we actively contribute to social change.
We know that our mission to provide and promote access to health only has an impact if it aims for structural changes.
And it is with the support of all the health professionals and volunteers committed to this vision of the right to health that, for 25 years, we have supported individuals and communities in the recognition of their rights.
