#TheLongestYear: A Year of Fighting for Access to Health in Ukraine

When we want time to pass quickly, when an event affects us or when we go through a difficult period, time seems to slow down or even stop. As in Ukraine this year. For those experiencing the war, it has surely felt like more than 365 days.

#TheLongestYear: A Year of Fighting for Access to Health in Ukraine

Faced with the largest movement of displaced persons and refugees since the Second World War, Ukraine and neighboring host countries have had to find immediate responses to the resulting humanitarian needs. Médecins du Monde is present to support them in this process and provide care and assistance whenever necessary.

In Ukraine, millions of people are deprived of essential services. The disruption of the healthcare system, the destruction of pharmacies and hospital facilities, significant shortages of healthcare personnel and supplies, and the isolation of communities are all factors that deeply affect those impacted by the conflict.

Although the Ukrainian healthcare system has shown great resilience, it cannot ensure routine check-ups, vaccinations, and care for people with chronic illnesses. The risk of deteriorating mental health is increasing as traumatic events persist.

Médecins du Monde collaborates with various partners to address the most urgent humanitarian needs. We provide access to essential medicines and medical equipment, in addition to ensuring care and psychosocial support in isolated regions.

The health impact of this war extends beyond Ukraine’s borders.

17.7 million people have left Ukraine since February 24, 2022. This war is putting a strain on support and health systems to cope with the massive influx of refugees. Active in neighboring countries such as Poland, Slovakia, Romania, and Moldova, Médecins du Monde supports access to primary health care services, mitigating various barriers. We are mobilized to provide healthcare and psychological support to refugees, in collaboration with national and regional health authorities and civil society organizations.

What Médecins du Monde has accomplished thanks to the generosity of donors

After one year of conflict, Médecins du Monde has

  • Provided direct care to 29,000 people and reached 2.3 million people through various activities.
  • Deployed 17 mobile clinics across Ukraine to reach the most vulnerable people.
  • Supported over 120 health facilities and more than 90 temporary collective centers.
  • Assisted 886,313 people through donations of medical supplies and other vital items.

Upcoming actions for the year ahead

Médecins du Monde plans to intensify its activities in the most affected oblasts in central, eastern, and southern Ukraine while continuing its interventions with displaced populations.

We will continue, in collaboration with various stakeholders, to support access to the healthcare system and provide healthcare and psychosocial support services to populations, both for refugees and host communities, as well as caregivers.

UKRAINE – The Never-Ending Year Report

This year has seemed endless for millions of people affected by the conflict in Ukraine. The support of donors has been crucial, as it has enabled Médecins du Monde to mobilize all its resources to fulfill our mission: to ensure and defend access to health for excluded and vulnerable people, both in Ukraine and in neighboring countries.
