The situation worsened in Pakistan in August 2022 when monsoon rains damaged or destroyed nearly 1,400 health facilities. The entire national health network was weakened at a time when needs were more urgent than ever. Indeed, 50% of the Pakistani population already had no access to primary health care services.
Crossed by major waterways, the regions of Nowshehra and Charsada in the north were particularly affected by the flooding. Following the recommendations of the Ministry of Health, Médecins du Monde concentrated its interventions there to meet the health and nutrition needs of the affected populations.

“The area was covered by 1.5 meters of water. Many epidemics emerged. Diseases such as scabies, skin infections, diarrhea, and leishmaniasis became uncontrollable. The situation was even more difficult because there were no health facilities nearby.
Médecins du Monde set up medical camps and mobile clinics. They organized health education and awareness workshops to slow down the epidemics. To fight malnutrition, they offered screening tests and deployed dispensaries, pharmacists, and experts.
Today, the situation has significantly improved. Diseases caused by the flooding have almost disappeared. Other issues related to sexual and reproductive health remain relevant but seem to be improving.”
