How is the right to abortion implemented in our field programs?

As part of International Development Week, Médecins du Monde invites you to a film-debate around the documentary “Our Silences – An te Kouman” on Thursday, February 1st, starting at 5:30 PM at the Goethe-Institut, in the presence of the international operations directors of the Médecins du Monde network.

In 2019, Médecins du Monde conducted an in-depth study on the
practices and consequences of clandestine abortions in Côte d’Ivoire,
from which the documentary “Our Silences” by Grégoire Couvert emerged.

Although the documentary is set in Côte d’Ivoire, its message
resonates on a global scale.
Wherever abortion is prohibited or
restricted, the realities, consequences, and women’s voices echo one
another.

Each year, 121 million women worldwide face an unintended pregnancy, and 60% of them decide to terminate it.

Despite the World Health Organization’s recognition of
abortion as an essential health service, 45% of abortions performed
worldwide are not medically supervised, resulting in the deaths of
39,000 women each year, not to mention the 7 million others hospitalized
due to complications.

The Event

In the presence of the international operations directors of the Médecins du Monde network, this film-debate offers a unique opportunity to explore the implementation of the right to abortion through our various programs, which adapt to challenging contexts, whether due to restrictive laws, a lack of appropriate, accessible, and quality services, or persistent and stigmatizing prejudices.
