After several years of civil war with Sudan, industry and infrastructure are extremely underdeveloped. Frequent flooding, droughts, ongoing conflicts and the displacement of millions of people have significantly reduced food production, and the country is constantly facing food insecurity.
The country has been plagued by political instability for years. There is currently no operational government in South Sudan. Frequent protests continue to take place in several cities, including Khartoum and Omdurman. Local climate stress can fuel political instability and national conflicts, as in the regions of Pibor, Tonj, Wau and Upper Nile.

Médecins du Monde has been present in Jonglei State since 2017, with the opening of a field coordination office in the city of Bor. Médecins du Monde was the first organization in the former Jonglei region to pilot a program in mental health and psychosocial support, providing basic counselling and specialized mental health services with psychotropic medications.
Between September 2022 and January 2023, Médecins du Monde deployed 15 community mobilizers (11 men and 4 women) in Duk, South Sudan, to strengthen community interventions and participation. In collaboration with health personnel from Boma and community workers.
