Yet, although the World Health Organization considers abortion an essential health service, nearly half of all abortions worldwide are not performed under medicalized conditions, resulting in the death of 39,000 women and the hospitalization of 7 million others each year.
This lack of access to safe abortion represents a real public health challenge.
In this episode, we address the multiple obstacles that hinder access to abortion worldwide: restrictive laws that criminalize or condition access, a lack of appropriate services, as well as persistent prejudices and stigmatization.
We will also explore the innovations and emerging practices that, in a context of public health crisis, help overcome these obstacles and ensure broader access to abortion.
Beyond the fundamental right, it is crucial to remember that abortion is above all an essential health service.
