The fighting has temporarily stopped, but the humanitarian crisis continues. This lull is an opportunity to access the most devastated areas and the most affected populations. It allows for identifying the needs of Lebanese people and Syrian and Palestinian refugees to address primary health and mental health emergencies. However, Médecins du Monde teams are compelled to continue their activities while preparing for a possible resumption of hostilities.
“A truce is not enough. Furthermore, the violence in Lebanon is directly linked to the hostilities that have been raging for over a year in Gaza. Médecins du Monde therefore urges all parties to the conflict to intensify their efforts to achieve a lasting ceasefire and a political resolution to the conflict in the region.
Only lasting peace in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip will protect civilians, as well as healthcare workers and humanitarians who risk their lives every day to assist populations and enable them to rebuild,” states Jean-François Corty, President of Médecins du Monde.
Note to editors:
Médecins du Monde has been present in Lebanon since 1990. Our teams consist of around a hundred people working across the country. We provide primary health care in nine health centres. We also carry out mental health and psychosocial support projects with refugee and Lebanese populations in the Beqaa Valley and near the Syrian border. Cooperation with local partners ensures quality access to care and medication.
